from gamepro.com:
This actually happened down in Florida, so check your packages carefully next time you buy big-ticket electronics at your local Wal-Mart. Jodi Wykle wanted to give her son a new Nintendo DS Lite and Guitar Hero for his birthday, but when he opened the box - still "factory sealed," of course - he actually found a wad of Chinese newspaper and rocks waiting inside.
Wykle attempted to return the DS and was pretty much told it was Nintendo's problem, but Nintendo couldn't do anything about it either. After her local TV station ran a report about it, though, Wal-Mart suddenly discovered the box o' rocks masquerading as a DS had been returned before. Wykle got a refund and a $20 gift card, which means that all you have to do in order to get good customer service from a Wal-Mart is shame them on television.
Consumer electronics boxes being stuffed with rocks after some thief makes off with the actual good are not exactly common but it happens-- a lot of stories involving Best Buy laptops and other nefariousness popped up in the wake of this one. It may irritating the snot out of the clerks, but make them open up your box for you before you leave the store. That momentary awkwardness is less painful in the long run than having to get on TV just to get a refund.
damn. i think this is a marketing ploy to get people away from the ds lite to the dsi. either way, thats funny.

This has happeneds to me twice. Once just recently.
The first time, I bought a surround sound system from walmart to replace my pc speakers, and when I got home it had two Minneapolis phone books in it. I should have known better when I saw it taped up, but seriously.
Second time I got screwed was like three months ago when I was buying a new hard drive. They had 1 tb WD drives on sale for 99 bucks, so I went to take advantage, and bought two of them. I got home, put one in, not a problem. Second one though Had no plastic wrap around the box, which was the first sign I was in for a ride. I opened it up, and what did I find? A freakin 8 GB hard drive from like 1994! It was terrible. When I called them (3am, I work second shift, get off at 11pm), they told me that unless it was unopened, I couldn't return it. I told them it was open when I bought it, and then they told me that I should have looked before purchasing it. I can understand something that has been sitting on the shelf for a bit, but these damn things are in a glass case, and when I brought it back they went over it like it had been at a crime scene. What was the damn problem with doing that the first time it was returned? I am almost certain that it's a Wal Mart employee doing this, especially in the case of the ds, only because they scan everything, and enter the serial number on the back when they sell this stuff. Kinda hard to mistake a ds for a rock...unless of course you work at Wal Mart I suppose.
