Square Enix has made official its GBP 84.3 million bid (119.4 million USD) for the struggling publisher Eidos, as the Japanese company looks to strengthen its presence in the Western market. The bid represents a 258% hike on Eidos' stock value – and Eidos shareholders have been recommended the deal by the company's board of directors.

"Eidos has a strong portfolio of established franchises, with highly talented employees. Square Enix recognises this and sees Eidos as both complementary to their business as well as a valuable brand within videogames", said Eidos CEO Phil Rogers in a statement picked up by gamesindustry.biz, "We are one year into our new strategy and believe that the prospects for the further development of our strategy and the business as a part of Square Enix would offer an exciting opportunity for the Eidos Group."

It's long been known that Square Enix has wanted to expand to the Western market, and Eidos – publishers of Tomb Raider, one of the most lucrative franchises in videogaming – would represent a strong purchase.

"Eidos maintains a strong reputation for high quality development and proven expertise in creating characters and storylines that appeal to consumers," offered Square Enix president Yoichi Wada, "Eidos' products are highly complementary to our business and will accelerate our aggressive expansion into Western markets. We believe that wide range of both companies' quality products encompassing major genres will enable us to meet diversified customers' expectations upon a global basis."

ok, so i was wrong about warner bros. getting them. ik they made a pass at eidos, but i still want square.
